The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash O. Amupitan, SAN, has reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to delivering free, fair, and credible elections in 2027, disclosing that preparations are already underway to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic process.

Amupitan gave the assurance in his 2026 New Year message to INEC staff nationwide, describing the new year as a period of renewal and a critical phase for institutional consolidation ahead of the next general elections.

Reflecting on the commission’s activities in 2025, the INEC chairman commended staff for their dedication and professionalism, particularly in the successful conduct of the Anambra State governorship election shortly after he assumed office on October 23. He noted that the election demonstrated the capacity of the commission to safeguard the sanctity of the ballot when guided by discipline, unity, and professionalism.

According to him, the commission is facing an exciting but demanding year in 2026, with key assignments including the Federal Capital Territory Area Council elections scheduled for February, as well as the off-cycle governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun states. He stressed that preparations for the 2027 general elections remain a top priority, expressing confidence that collective efforts would ensure seamless and credible polls.

Amupitan also pledged to prioritise the welfare of INEC staff, reiterating his commitment to building a work environment anchored on equity, discipline, and mutual respect. He assured employees that their well-being would remain central to the commission’s agenda, while also fostering a culture where every staff member feels valued, protected, and adequately equipped to perform optimally.

He urged staff to remain steadfast in upholding the integrity of the electoral system, emphasising that the dedication and professionalism of INEC personnel are essential to building public trust in the commission and ensuring that every eligible voter is empowered and every vote counts.

Expressing optimism about the year ahead, the INEC chairman said 2026 would be a period of significant progress for the commission, as he wished staff and their families a prosperous New Year and encouraged them to brace for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in service to the nation.
