A yet unknown 200-level Chemical Engineering student from the Federal University, Otuoke, tragically drowned in Ekoli Creek, Yenagoa, over a N300 bet.
Sources from Otuoke, the hometown of former President Goodluck Jonathan, said the tragic incident happened on Sunday morning.
Our source said the remains of the ill-fated student were yet to be retrieved on Monday evening, adding that it is expected to prop up from the water before midday on Tuesday.
Our source, who is familiar with the situation, said the victim had wagered with some individuals that he could swim across the river.
“It was a contest to swim across the Ekoli River in Yenagoa, the state capital, but midway through the contest, he lost strength and sank to the belly of the river. He has not been seen since then,” the source added.
The university’s Public Relations Officer, Ms. Mercy Ekott, could not be reached for comment this morning, even as the Bayelsa State Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Musa Mohammed, could neither deny nor confirm the incident.
Mohammed said report of the incident had not reached his office.
