A housewife in Sokoto State has allegedly poured hot oil on her husband’s private organ after accusing him of speaking with another woman on the phone.
The victim, Bello Abubakar, a resident of the Yar Gabas area of Sokoto metropolis, denied the allegation, insisting he was not involved in any inappropriate relationship. He attributed the incident to what he described as a recurring spiritual condition affecting his wife.
Recounting the incident, Abubakar said the attack occurred shortly after he returned home from observing early morning prayers at a mosque.
“I left home for the mosque to perform Subhi prayer and later fell asleep there. I woke up around 8 a.m. and returned home, where I met her crying. When I asked what was wrong, she refused to respond,” he said.
According to him, he proceeded to perform ablution and began reciting the Qur’an before preparing to leave for work after receiving a call to repair an electrical appliance.
“As I was about to leave, she asked me to wait. I was lying on the bed naked when she came in holding a cup containing melted butter. I didn’t suspect anything because she usually prays over water during such episodes,” he said.
He added that moments later, she poured the hot substance on his private part, causing severe burns.
“I suddenly felt intense heat and screamed. When I checked my hand, it was already burned too. I sustained serious injuries,” he added.
Abubakar said he is currently receiving treatment at a specialist hospital in Sokoto and is responding to care.
A senior brother to the victim, Tasiu Abubakar, said the couple had lived peacefully before the incident but alleged that the woman’s mother had initially opposed the marriage, raising suspicions of possible external influence.
He added that both families have agreed to resolve the matter amicably and have decided not to pursue legal action.
Efforts to reach the wife or her relatives for comments were unsuccessful.
When contacted, the Sokoto State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmad Rufai, said he would look into the matter but had yet to provide further details as of the time of filing this report.
