A tragic car accident in Port Harcourt has left three people dead and three others critically injured after a vehicle veered off the road and ploughed into pedestrians along the Eliozu axis of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Rivers State.

The incident occurred on Monday night near the Unity Filling Station in Eliozu, sending shockwaves through the busy Port Harcourt community. Eyewitnesses reported that the car was travelling at high speed when the driver lost control and crashed into several passersby on the walkway.

Before coming to a halt, the vehicle reportedly knocked down multiple electric poles, leaving behind a trail of destruction.

The driver and occupants—believed to be young men allegedly involved in internet fraud, commonly referred to as Yahoo boys—fled the scene immediately after the crash.

A resident who witnessed the scene said, “We found six people lying motionless. Police from the Rumuokoro Division arrived quickly, removed the victims, and took the car to their station.”

The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed that three people were killed, while three others are currently receiving treatment in the hospital. Police spokesperson, Superintendent Grace Iringe-Koko, provided an update on the incident.

“According to the report, three individuals have been confirmed dead, and three others are in the hospital receiving treatment. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene. The car has been recovered and is now in police custody. We have commenced a full investigation to identify and apprehend those responsible,” she said.

The fatal Eliozu accident has sparked concern among residents, many of whom are calling for increased traffic enforcement and safety measures in the area. The incident has once again raised questions about reckless driving and the alleged involvement of Yahoo boys in dangerous activities across Rivers State.

Authorities are urging members of the public with useful information to assist in the ongoing investigation. The Rumuokoro Police Division is leading the efforts to track down the suspects.
