Panic spread through the Agulu and Nanka communities in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State on Thursday following the fatal shooting of a lawyer and his client by unidentified gunmen shortly after a court appearance.
Eyewitnesses said the victims were ambushed and killed without resistance at a boundary point between Nanka and Agulu, along the Amawbia-Agulu-Nanka-Ekwulobia-Uga-Akokwa Road. The lawyer had earlier appeared in court with his client, but both were trailed and attacked soon after leaving the court premises.
According to sources, the case being handled was of significant importance. One eyewitness recounted that the assailants first shot the lawyer before turning on the client, who attempted to flee but was gunned down. The attackers reportedly fled the scene immediately after the killings.
Confirming the incident, spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, stated that the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, led a team of senior officers, including detectives, to the crime scene in Egbebelu village, Nanka, Orumba North Local Government Area.
Ikenga revealed that preliminary findings suggest the victims were followed from the court and ambushed by armed men on a motorcycle. One person survived the attack and is currently receiving treatment. The survivor has since provided valuable information to aid the investigation.
The police recovered a red Toyota Camry believed to belong to one of the victims at the scene. The bodies of the deceased have been identified by their families.
CP Orutugu has ordered a comprehensive investigation and deployed tactical and intelligence units to track down those responsible. Further updates are expected as the probe continues.
