Ghana is in talks to export electricity to Nigeria in exchange for natural gas, according to Energy Minister John Jinapor.
Currently, Ghana imports Nigerian gas through the West African Gas Pipeline, using it to generate around 25% of its electricity. With surplus capacity from its hydro and thermal plants, Ghana is proposing to use Nigerian gas to produce power and send a portion back to Nigeria.
The proposed barter deal is designed to reduce Ghana’s foreign exchange burden while supporting Nigeria in addressing its chronic power shortages.
Though still under negotiation, the arrangement represents a strategic opportunity to enhance regional energy cooperation via the West African Power Pool.
