Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has approved a minor reshuffle of the State Executive Council, redeploying Barrister Christopher Green as the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice.
Green, who previously served as Commissioner for Sports, was moved to the Ministry of Justice following approval granted at the last State Executive Council meeting for 2025.
The development was disclosed in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Communications, Dr Honour Sirawoo.
According to the statement, Green will also continue to coordinate the activities of the Ministry of Sports pending the appointment of a substantive commissioner to head the ministry.
The redeployment takes immediate effect and, according to the state government, reflects the administration’s commitment to strengthening governance, ensuring continuity in service delivery, and optimising the performance of key ministries across the state.
Meanwhile, political observers note that the cabinet adjustment comes amid heightened political tension in Rivers State following the prolonged rift between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.
Wike has recently asserted that his political camp controls grassroots structures in the state, claiming that no candidate can win elections in Rivers without its backing. He also accused Governor Fubara of breaching agreements allegedly reached during a peace effort brokered in September by President Bola Tinubu.
Sources familiar with the matter have suggested that part of the understanding was that Fubara would not seek a second term in office. However, recent political moves by the governor have been interpreted by analysts as indicating possible interest in a second-term ambition.
Analysts warn that the unfolding political developments could further intensify tensions in the state’s political landscape in the months ahead.
