Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has approved the appointment of Hon. Benibo Anabraba as the new Secretary to the State Government (SSG).

The appointment was announced on Monday in a statement issued by Dr. Honour Sirawoo, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Communications.

According to the statement, Anabraba will be sworn in today, Monday, October 13, 2025, at 4:00 p.m at the State Executive Council Chambers, Government House, Port Harcourt.

The statement read: “His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, GSSRS, Governor of Rivers State, has approved the appointment of Hon. Benibo Anabraba as Secretary to the Rivers State Government. The new SSG will be sworn in today, Monday, October 13, 2025, by 4:00 p.m. at the State Executive Council Chambers, Government House, Port Harcourt.”

Anabraba’s appointment marks one of Fubara’s first major administrative decisions since his reinstatement as governor following months of political and legal turbulence.

President Bola Tinubu had, on March 18, 2025, declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, suspending Governor Fubara, his deputy, and members of the House of Assembly. The move followed a prolonged political standoff between Fubara and his predecessor, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

During the emergency rule, Tinubu appointed retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas as Sole Administrator of the state with a mandate to restore political stability. Upon assumption of office, Ibas suspended all commissioners, special advisers, and assistants appointed by Fubara and dissolved several boards and parastatals.

Following the lifting of the emergency rule and Ibas’s exit on September 18, 2025, the status of Fubara’s former appointees had remained unclear. The Rivers State House of Assembly subsequently urged the governor to submit a fresh list of commissioner nominees and the 2025 budget for consideration.

Governor Fubara’s latest appointment signals a renewed effort to rebuild his administration and consolidate his political footing in the state.
