Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo, a former Governor of Oyo State, has passed away just days before his 90th birthday.

The announcement was made in a family statement on Sunday, signed by Oladapo Ogunwusi on behalf of the Olunloyo family. Titled “Victor Olunloyo Goes Home,” the statement expressed gratitude to God for his life and service.

“With heavy hearts but gratitude to the Almighty, we announce the passing of Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo—former governor of Oyo State, renowned mathematician, engineer, and technocrat,” the statement read.

Dr. Olunloyo, who held traditional titles, including the Balogun of Oyo and Otun Bobasewa of Ife, served as the first rector of both The Polytechnic, Ibadan, and Kwara State Polytechnic. His distinguished career in public service, academia, and leadership is remembered with pride by his family and associates.

The family appealed for the public and media’s understanding as they begin preparations for his burial.

“Even from everlasting to everlasting, He is God,” the statement concluded.

In April 2024, false reports of Dr. Olunloyo’s death circulated online. At the time, he refuted the rumour in an interview at his Molete residence in Ibadan, declaring, “I’m still here, not yet gone.”

He expressed concern over such misinformation and reminded the public that mortality is a shared fate. “Those spreading false death news and those they speak of will all die one day,” he said. Reflecting on his longevity, he noted, “My father died at 42, my mother at 102. I’m 89—I’ve exceeded the expected life span.”

A similar rumour had surfaced in June 2022, falsely claiming he had died at the University College Hospital, Ibadan. The family later clarified that he was alive but managing age-related health issues, and they requested prayers for his recovery.

Dr. Olunloyo leaves behind a legacy of public service, intellectual excellence, and traditional leadership.
