In a diplomatic call today, U.S. President Joe Biden spoke with Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, emphasizing the United States’ support for Nigeria amid recent crises and underscoring the strong partnership between the two nations.

President Biden began by offering his condolences to President Tinubu for the devastating floods that recently struck northeastern Nigeria, resulting in significant displacement and damage.

Biden acknowledged the resilience of the Nigerian people and expressed the United States’ readiness to support recovery efforts as Nigeria addresses these challenges.

A key point in the call was President Biden’s appreciation for President Tinubu’s decisive humanitarian action in securing the release of American citizen and former U.S. law enforcement official Tigran Gambaryan, who had been detained.

President Biden noted that this act reflected the strength of the bilateral relationship and Tinubu’s commitment to humanitarian principles.

The leaders discussed the broad scope of cooperation between the United States and Nigeria, highlighting the importance of their partnership in addressing global security, economic prosperity, and technological advancements.

President Biden praised Nigeria’s commitment to counter illicit finance activities, especially through the newly established Bilateral Liaison Group on Illicit Finance and Cryptocurrencies.

This initiative, aimed at tackling illegal financial flows, is expected to bolster both countries’ efforts to secure financial systems and prevent criminal activities.

Further, the conversation covered the shared commitment to advancing innovative technologies that could drive economic growth and development.

The two presidents also recognized the need for reform in international organizations to ensure greater African representation and influence, a goal that aligns with Nigeria’s leadership aspirations in the region and the continent at large.
