The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.

This announcement comes as part of the ongoing seven-day national mourning period declared by President Bola Tinubu to pay tribute to Buhari’s life and legacy.

The declaration was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo stated that the public holiday is a gesture of respect for the former president’s contributions to Nigeria’s democracy, governance, and national development.

“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation. This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld,” the statement read.

The minister encouraged citizens to use the day to honour Buhari’s memory by fostering peace, unity, and patriotism—values the late president championed throughout his time in office.

As previously announced, national flags will continue to fly at half-mast throughout the mourning period, which began on Sunday, July 13.

The Federal Government also extended its heartfelt condolences to Buhari’s family, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians, while offering prayers for the peaceful repose of his soul.
