The federal government of Nigeria has said that cesarean sections will now be provided free of charge to women in need, as part of its efforts to reduce the country’s maternal mortality rate.

This came as the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Pate, launched the Maternal Mortality Reduction Initiative ( MAMII) at the ongoing three-day Nigeria Health Sector-Wide Joint Annual Review(JAR) in Abuja.

The MAMII is a groundbreaking effort by the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare aimed at tackling Nigeria’s critical maternal and neonatal mortality rates, which is among the highest globally

According to Pate, the initiative is an ambitious commitment to reducing maternal and newborn mortality across Nigeria.

A tweet from the official X handle of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare stated, “In a powerful move, Coordinating Minister @muhammadpate just announced that Cesarean Sections for all Nigerian women who need them will now be FREE!”

According to the post, Mr Pate noted that no woman should lose her life simply because she cannot afford a C-section.

Key partners like the World Bank, WHO, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation commented in support of the initiative.

“Together, we’re building a future where every Nigerian mother and child can thrive.” Part of the post reads.
