Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central), has dismissed allegations that President Bola Tinubu is pressuring opposition lawmakers, particularly from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking at the National Assembly in Abuja, Bamidele justified the defection of three Kebbi State senators—Adamu Aliero, Yahaya Abdullahi, and Garba Maidoki—who formally joined the APC.
The event was witnessed by APC National Chairman Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris, and APC Organising Secretary Sulaiman Argungu.
Bamidele emphasised that the defections are voluntary and reflect a broader commitment to national unity. “This is not about coercion or building a one-party state,” he said. “Our party remains open to all Nigerians, regardless of religion or ethnicity.”
He highlighted that Nigeria is effectively operating under a government of national unity, noting that even parties like APGA have nominated officials to the APC-led federal government.
Recalling the PDP’s history of pressuring defections when it held power, Bamidele said, “Unlike past governments, no one is being forced. These senators made their decisions in the national interest.”
He praised the experience and integrity of the defecting senators, two of whom have served as governor and Senate leader, saying their move reflects a strategic effort to support national development.
“To those still in opposition, we’ll continue to work together for Nigeria’s progress,” Bamidele added. “Party lines shouldn’t divide us when it comes to public interest.”
