A Magistrate Court sitting in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, has ordered the remand of a 30-year-old man, Oforbuike Damian, over the alleged murder of his mother, Onyema.
The incident reportedly occurred on March 19, 2026, in Ukawu, Onicha Local Government Area, where the suspect was accused of stabbing his mother to death following a dispute. The disagreement was said to have stemmed from the mother’s alleged refusal to perform a spiritual bath for him and to open a barbing salon for his brother.
Following the incident, Damian allegedly fled the community but was later apprehended by villagers and handed over to the police.
He was subsequently arraigned by the Police Directorate of Legal Services, led by Chinagorom Eze. During proceedings, the suspect, who had no legal representation, reportedly admitted to the offence.
According to the charge sheet, the defendant is accused of causing the death of his mother by stabbing her with a knife, an offence punishable under Section 319(1) of the Criminal Code Law of Ebonyi State.
The presiding Magistrate, Agnma Chinedu Agnma, ordered that the suspect be remanded in a correctional centre and directed the Director of Public Prosecutions to take over the case, noting that the court lacks jurisdiction to try the matter. The case was adjourned to April 9, 2026, for further proceedings.
