Chelsea Football Club will donate a portion of the bonus earned from their FIFA Club World Cup triumph to the family of the late Diogo Jota, the Liverpool and Portugal forward who tragically passed away alongside his brother, André Silva, earlier this summer.

The Blues were crowned champions of the expanded Club World Cup after a commanding 3-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the final, held on July 13 at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. The historic win secured the club a prize of approximately $114.6 million (£84.4m), with $15.5 million (£11.4m) of that amount set aside for player bonuses, according to The Athletic.

In a gesture of solidarity and compassion, both Chelsea players and the club’s hierarchy agreed to donate an equivalent sum—matching each player’s bonus share—to Jota’s family. Each bonus is reportedly worth over $500,000 before deductions for tax, currency conversion, and employer-related costs.

Jota, 28, and his younger brother Silva, a player for Portuguese side Penafiel, died in a car accident in Spain’s Zamora province on July 3—just ten days before Chelsea’s Club World Cup final. Their untimely deaths sent shockwaves through the football world, prompting tributes from fans, clubs, and fellow professionals.

Liverpool FC, where Jota has played since 2020, has announced several initiatives to honour his legacy. These include a permanent memorial sculpture at Anfield, the introduction of a ‘Forever 20’ emblem on the team’s kits for the 2025/26 season, and the launch of a grassroots football programme in his name through the LFC Foundation.

Chelsea’s donation stands as a rare act of cross-club compassion and unity within the sport—transcending rivalries to support a grieving family and celebrate the life of a beloved footballer.
