Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu has eliminated the Niger Delta Ministry and the Ministry of Sports Development as part of a significant restructuring aimed at improving government efficiency.

This decision was made during the ongoing Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting at the State House in Abuja, as reported by Bayo Ononuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, via his verified X account, @aonanuga1956.

A new Ministry of Regional Development will be established to oversee various regional development commissions, including the Niger Delta Development Commission, North West Development Commission, South West Development Commission, and North East Development Commission.

The responsibilities of the abolished Ministry of Sports Development will be transferred to the National Sports Commission.

Additionally, the FEC has approved the merger of the Ministry of Tourism with the Ministry of Culture and Creative Economy.

This restructuring aligns with President Tinubu’s goal of enhancing government performance.

The decision to dissolve the Niger Delta Ministry is attributed to its overlapping functions with the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), which will continue to focus on sustainable development in the region.

Onanuga stated, “President Tinubu and the Federal Executive Council have dissolved the Niger Delta Ministry and the Ministry of Sports Development. A new Ministry of Regional Development will oversee all regional development commissions, including the Niger Delta Development Commission, North West Development Commission, South West Development Commission, and North East Development Commission.

“The National Sports Commission will now take over the responsibilities of the former Ministry of Sports.

“The FEC has also approved the merger of the Ministry of Tourism with the Ministry of Culture and Creative Economy.

These decisions were made during the FEC meeting today in Abuja.”
