Violence erupted between the towns of Ilobu and Ifon in Osun State, resulting in the deaths of three people, including a former councillor, and leaving over two dozen injured.
The clashes, driven by a land dispute, escalated on Thursday, with both communities using guns and machetes. Several properties were destroyed, and many residents, including women and children, were displaced.
Despite efforts by Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, including imposing curfews and creating a peace panel, tensions flared again on Monday. By Friday, both towns saw widespread arson, and residents fled to nearby areas like Okini and Agunbelewo for safety.
Akeeb Adekunle, spokesperson for the Olufon of Ifon, accused Ilobu residents of launching repeated attacks, even after police intervention.
In response, Chief Leke Ogunsola of Ilobu denied these claims, stating that Ifon had attacked first, targeting farmlands and attempting kidnappings. The violence continued, with homes burned and injuries reported.
The police have been deployed to restore order, and the state government has imposed a curfew from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. until peace is achieved.
Governor Adeleke expressed concern over the situation and called for immediate action to resolve the conflict.
