NIGERIA: Police in Lagos have arrested Idera Bassey, a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) doctor over a failed surgery that led to the death of a patient in the highbrow Lekki area of the state.

Sources said the victim, simply identified as Abiola, slumped and died after a nurse at Idera Bassey’s hospital administered an injection to her.

“The operation had not even started before she died. They said Abiola fainted after they injected her and was rushed to another hospital in Lekki, but she was declared DOA (dead on arrival)”, our source said.

Our findings showed that BBL, a medical procedure which is done to enlarge the butt of patients who desire bigger ‘backsides’, has become fashionable in recent times with ladies spending millions of naira to look more endowed.

On-air-personality Nancy Isimen, Ini Edo, Destiny Etiko, Tonto Dike, Toke Makinwa and Bobrisky (Idris Okuneye) among others, have all reportedly gone under the knives at one time or the other to increase their backside sizes.

VeryWell Health, an online medical service, describes BBL as “usually performed as an outpatient procedure. Typically, general anaesthesia is used, or it may be done using intravenous sedation and local anaesthesia.”

The medical site said the procedure involves draining fat, by liposuction, from a patient’s lower back, thighs and abdomen, and transferring it to enlarge the backside.

Medical experts say BBL “has the highest mortality rate of all cosmetic procedures. In 2017, it was determined that the most significant risk of death was from pulmonary fat embolism.”

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, on Tuesday, confirmed Idera Bassey’s arrest, stating that she is currently being investigated at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Panti, Lagos.

Explaining what the police knew so far about Abiola’s death, Hundeyin said, “Upon their arrival, the clinic owner directed a nurse to administer the injection to Abiola. Moments later, chaos ensued as the woman lost consciousness and started gasping for breath.

“Desperate for help, the driver rushed Abiola to another hospital in Lekki Phase 1 but she was confirmed dead by the staff on duty upon arrival.”

“Detectives from the command had visited the scene, gathered evidence, inspected and photographed the woman’s remains, and subsequently transported the corpse to a morgue for autopsy.” The Police said.
