Bandits have abducted 25 students from the Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School (GGCSS) in Maga, Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
The armed attackers stormed the school on Sunday night, killing the Vice Principal, Malam Hassan Makuku, before whisking several students away. Witnesses said the bandits operated unhindered, plunging the community into panic and mourning.
Sources revealed that Makuku was shot while attempting to protect the girls during the assault. Residents have since been offering prayers for his soul, asking Allah to grant him mercy and comfort his family.
Confirming the incident, Kebbi State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Nafiu Abubakar, stated that 25 students were abducted during the raid.
The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ahmed Idris, disclosed that Deputy Governor Senator Umar Tafida had been dispatched to the school to assess the situation on behalf of Governor Nasir Idris, who is currently out of the state.
“The deputy governor is on his way to know the exact situation. The governor is not in the state for now, but his deputy will go on his behalf until he returns at any moment,” Idris said.
Parents and residents are anxiously waiting for further updates on the fate of the abducted schoolgirls.
The attack adds to a troubling pattern of school abductions in northern Nigeria. In recent years, hundreds of students have been kidnapped in raids on educational institutions, including the 2021 abductions in Jangebe and Kagara, the 2020 Kankara raid, the 2018 Dapchi incident, and the 2014 Chibok tragedy, which drew global outrage.
The abduction in Maga is the latest grim reminder of the persistent insecurity threatening education and safety across the region.
