Felix Morka, the National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has clarified that the ruling party has no intention of turning Nigeria into a one-party state.

Speaking on Arise Television’s The Morning Show on Thursday, Morka addressed concerns arising from recent defections of opposition members to the APC. He emphasized that these defections do not signal a deliberate move toward establishing a one-party system.

He drew comparisons with the era when the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) held power, controlling over 28 states without facing similar accusations.

“If members of the PDP or Labour Party choose to join the APC because they align with our processes, there’s nothing wrong with that,” Morka said. “That doesn’t mean we’re pushing for a one-party state.”

He stressed that Nigeria’s Constitution and electoral framework uphold a multi-party democracy, making any move toward a one-party system practically impossible without a significant constitutional overhaul.

“Our Constitution, the Electoral Act, and other legal frameworks support a pluralistic political structure,” Morka explained. “To shift to a one-party system would require massive legal changes, which are nearly impossible to achieve.”

He concluded by dismissing the one-party narrative and affirming that the APC’s focus remains on preserving its internal cohesion and stability rather than undermining Nigeria’s democratic diversity..
