The demolished building

The Abia State Government on Tuesday demolished a building in Osisioma Local Government Area that was used as a hideout by kidnappers. The government also issued a warning to landlords about renting properties without conducting proper background checks on tenants.
Prince Okey Kanu, the Commissioner for Information, issued the caution during a press briefing in Umuahia. He expressed concern that many landlords focus on rent collection rather than verifying the identities and activities of their tenants.
In response to the demolition, Kanu stressed the importance of landlords carrying out thorough background checks before leasing their properties. He also urged property owners to keep accurate records of their tenants and ensure their properties are not used for illegal activities.
“The state government will not hesitate to demolish any house used for kidnapping,” Kanu warned, urging residents to remain vigilant, monitor their surroundings, and report suspicious activities to security agencies.
The crackdown follows a recent police operation in which six suspected kidnappers were neutralized, four victims rescued, and weapons recovered, including two AK-47 rifles, six magazines, and 32 rounds of live ammunition.
Speaking on the development, Governor Alex Otti reiterated his administration’s zero tolerance for criminal hideouts, ordering the complete demolition of the Osokwa house and vowing to prosecute its owner.
“Any landlord who allows criminals to use their property is as guilty as the criminals themselves,” Otti declared.
He directed the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to work with the traditional ruler of the area to ensure communities remain alert to suspicious individuals in their midst.
