A devastating road accident in Samawa village, located in Garun Malam Local Government Area of Kano State, has claimed the lives of 12 people, leaving five others injured.

The fatal crash occurred in the early hours of Friday along the Zaria Highway. It involved a DAF CF95 heavy-duty truck, which was reportedly conveying both goods and passengers.

According to the Kano Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the heavily loaded vehicle veered off course, resulting in the tragic loss of life.

In a statement signed by FRSC spokesperson Abdullahi Labara, the agency confirmed that emergency responders swiftly moved the injured to Kura General Hospital for medical treatment.

Meanwhile, the bodies of the deceased were deposited at the Nassarawa Hospital morgue in Kano metropolis.

“Of the 19 people on board, 12 died instantly, five sustained various degrees of injuries, and two escaped unharmed,” Labara disclosed.

While investigations into the exact cause of the crash are ongoing, the FRSC has urged motorists—especially long-distance drivers operating at night—to strictly observe road safety regulations to prevent further tragedies.

This latest accident is part of a worrying trend of frequent crashes in the Garun Malam axis. In July 2025, the FRSC confirmed that 21 people were killed in another horrific accident at Kasuwar Dogo, Dakatsalle, within the same local government area.

Just a month earlier, in June 2025, no fewer than 22 athletes from Kano State, including their instructors, lost their lives near Kasuwa Kifi, close to Dakatsalle, while returning from Ogun State after representing the state at the National Sports Festival. The exact cause of that incident remains undetermined.

The recurrent loss of lives on this highway, particularly within Garun Malam LGA, underscores the urgent need for government intervention and improved road safety measures in the region.
