The detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has expressed disappointment over the absence of strong Igbo leadership, lamenting that “no prominent voices are actively defending our cause.”

He warned that such neglect weakens the struggle for self-determination, citing the case of Ralph Uwazurike, who, despite his sacrifices, was abandoned during his imprisonment.

Kanu made these remarks during a visit from the President-General of the Igbo Community Association (ICA), FCT, Engr. Ikenna Ellis-Ezenekwe, at the Department of State Services (DSS) headquarters in Abuja. Despite his detention, Kanu appeared healthy, had gained weight, and remained in high spirits.

“He communicated a strong message of self-assurance, noting that he is taking his prescribed medications and remains in good spirits,” Ezenekwe stated.

Reaffirming his belief in his legal team, Kanu expressed confidence that the courts would grant him freedom by April 2025.

He reiterated his call for a referendum on Biafra, insisting, “I have committed no crime other than urging our people to awaken from their slumber.”

Ezenekwe, moved by Kanu’s resilience, called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene. “I appeal to President Tinubu to demonstrate the political will to secure Kanu’s release. His continued detention is a symbol of political repression rather than justice,” he urged.
