Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, has unveiled a new message translation feature on WhatsApp, aimed at breaking down language barriers for its more than 3 billion users worldwide.
The feature, which began rolling out on Tuesday, allows users to translate messages directly within chats while keeping conversations private. By long-pressing a message and tapping the Translate option, users can choose their preferred language.
According to WhatsApp, the tool works across one-on-one chats, group conversations, and even Channel updates. For Android users, there is also the option to enable automatic translation for entire threads, enabling real-time communication across languages.
The feature is being introduced gradually across both Android and iOS. Android users will initially have access to six languages — English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic. iPhone users, however, will start with over 19 supported languages.
WhatsApp emphasized that translations are designed with privacy in mind. All translations take place directly on users’ devices, ensuring that WhatsApp itself cannot access or store translated messages. This aligns with the platform’s long-standing commitment to end-to-end encryption.
“Message translations were designed to protect the privacy of your chats. That’s why translations occur on your device where WhatsApp cannot seeh them,” the company explained in a statement.
With WhatsApp used in over 180 countries, Meta says the feature will help foster deeper connections across regions with diverse languages. “We’re excited to bring message translations to WhatsApp, so you can more easily communicate across languages,” the company added.
Part of a Bigger Push
The launch comes just months after WhatsApp introduced new features in June aimed at boosting creator and business engagement. These included Channel Subscriptions for exclusive content, Promoted Channels for wider reach, and Ads in Status to enhance business visibility.
Meta revealed that more than 1.5 billion people use WhatsApp’s Updates tab daily to view Status and Channel content, underscoring the platform’s growing role beyond personal messaging.
Industry analysts see the translation feature as part of WhatsApp’s broader strategy to evolve into a more inclusive communication hub, while simultaneously expanding opportunities for creators and businesses on the platform.
