A wandering elephant from a government-reserved forest reportedly attacked and killed a farmer, Musa Kalamu, in Itasin-Imobi, Ijebu East Local Government Area of Ogun State.
According to reliable sources, the tragic incident occurred on Monday when the wild elephant invaded Kalamu’s farm and fatally attacked him.
Residents say the elephant has been a recurring menace in the community for over four years, damaging crops and fishing nets.
“This elephant keeps coming into our community to destroy our crops, damage our fishing nets, and now, it has taken a life,” a concerned local lamented.
The people of Itasin-Imobi have called on the state government and relevant authorities to intervene urgently before the situation worsens.
Confirming the incident, Ogun State Commissioner for Forestry, Taiwo Oludotun, stated, “Yes, we are aware and are already on our way to the community.”
The State Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, also confirmed the attack in a message on Tuesday, saying, “The DPO Ogbere received information from Itasin community on 28/07/2025 around 1620hrs that elephants escaped from a government reserve and attacked Musa Kalamu, who died en route to the hospital. Forestry officers have been contacted to prevent further damage. Calm has since returned to the community.”
A disturbing video circulated on Tuesday showing the lifeless body of Kalamu, with visible injuries consistent with an elephant attack. Locals in the video pleaded for government assistance, emphasizing the urgent need to address the ongoing elephant problem in their community.
