A new high-tech surveillance partnership is set to strengthen Nigeria’s fight against crude oil theft, as American defence technology company Textron Systems moves to equip Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited (TSSNL) with advanced reconnaissance drones for operations in the Niger Delta.

Under the agreement, Textron Systems will supply three Aerosonde Mk 4.7 Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) Unmanned Aerial System drones to Tantita, the private security firm engaged by the Federal Government to protect critical oil and gas infrastructure across the region.

Tantita is owned by Niger Delta leader and former militant, Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo.

The deal represents a major upgrade in Nigeria’s oilfield security framework, coming amid renewed government efforts to curb crude oil theft, pipeline vandalism, and illegal refining, which have cost the country billions of dollars in lost revenue over the years.

The Aerosonde Mk 4.7 is a long-endurance tactical drone built for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions. Its VTOL capability allows it to operate without a runway, making it particularly suitable for the creeks, swamps, and offshore terrain of the Niger Delta.

Industry experts say the deployment of the drones will significantly enhance real-time monitoring of pipelines and oil facilities, allowing for quicker detection of breaches and more coordinated responses to criminal activity. The systems are capable of extended flight operations while transmitting live imagery and data to ground control stations.

While the development has drawn mixed reactions nationwide, supporters describe it as a bold and necessary step to safeguard national assets and sustain recent improvements in crude oil production. On social media, some users have welcomed the move, expressing optimism that it could further reduce oil theft.

Tantita Security Services has been a key player in Nigeria’s pipeline surveillance programme since its engagement by the Federal Government in 2022, with authorities reporting increased oil output following intensified security operations along major production corridors.
