The United Kingdom has introduced a major policy change that will allow international students already in the country to apply for the Innovator Founder visa without leaving the UK, once they meet the required criteria.

The new pathway, which replaces the former Start-up route, will come into effect on 25 November. It gives eligible graduates three years to develop an innovative and scalable business idea, with the option to extend their stay and apply for permanent residency after the initial period.

To qualify, applicants must be at least 18 years old, meet the English language requirement, and show a minimum of £1,270 in savings. Their business must also receive endorsement from an approved body, and visa holders will undergo mandatory progress check-ins at 12 and 24 months.

The update arrives as the UK government moves to tighten other aspects of post-study immigration. Beginning 1 January 2027, the Graduate Route will be shortened, reducing the job-search period for international graduates from two years to 18 months.

Officials say the revised Innovator Founder pathway aims to support high-potential entrepreneurs and retain global talent within the UK’s innovation ecosystem.
