Fear has spread through Ughelli town in Delta State after gunmen shot dead a man identified only as Anthony in front of his wife and two daughters on Saturday.
Witnesses said the attackers stormed Anthony’s residence in the Ekrejebo area early in the morning, ordered him and his family outside, and executed him in public.
Residents told local news outlet Warri Aproko that the victim initially survived the assault and was taken to a nearby private hospital. The assailants reportedly tracked him to the facility and shot him again, killing him on his hospital bed.
Community sources said the killing may have been connected to a dispute over proceeds from online fraud, locally known as “Yahoo Yahoo.” Terms such as “aza” and “pick-up” are used to describe account holders who allegedly receive and distribute the illicit proceeds.
Ughelli and nearby towns including Sapele and Udu have seen a rise in similar killings linked to internet fraud disputes in recent years, residents said.
Police have not yet commented on the incident.
