Two children have drowned in a muddy floodwater collection site at Erediauwa Street, off Sapele Road, in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State.
The tragic incident occurred on Sunday when four children reportedly went to play around the area designated by the state government for floodwater collection. According to a witness who spoke on condition of anonymity, the children slipped into the muddy site while playing.
The source said two of the children were already dead before help could reach them, while the other two were rescued and rushed to a nearby hospital where they were resuscitated.
“That area where the four kids slipped into is used to collect flood water, and no one would have thought the children would go there because it’s muddy,” the witness said. “The two children were fished out dead, while two others were resuscitated at a nearby hospital where they were rushed to. The four children had gone to play in the area designated by the state government to collect flood water.”
The spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the incident, stating that a rescue team was immediately dispatched after authorities received information about the development.
She said two of the children died at the scene before rescuers arrived, while the other two were taken to the hospital for treatment.
“The children actually died in the mud before rescue got to them, while two were rescued,” she added.
