A tragic accident occurred on Thursday morning at Eleko Junction along the Lekki–Ajah Expressway in Lagos State as a granite-laden truck toppled onto a Toyota saloon car, killing the male driver and leaving his wife critically injured.

The incident was confirmed in a statement issued by the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Adebayo Taofiq.

According to preliminary security reports, the articulated truck, heavily loaded with granite and travelling at high speed from the Epe axis, suffered a catastrophic brake failure as it approached Eleko Junction. The mechanical fault reportedly led to a sudden loss of control, causing the truck to veer off its lane and ram into the Toyota saloon car heading from Ajah toward Epe.

The force of the collision caused the truck to overturn and crush the smaller vehicle, trapping the driver inside the mangled wreckage.

Officials of LASTMA and the Federal Road Safety Corps, assisted by bystanders, rescued the victims from the wreckage. However, the male driver was confirmed dead at the scene, while his wife sustained life-threatening injuries and was rushed to a medical facility for urgent treatment.

The truck driver reportedly fled immediately after the crash. Operatives from the Akodo Police Division were on ground to provide security during the rescue operation.

Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the crash as avoidable. He urged motorists, particularly truck drivers, to ensure regular vehicle maintenance and cautioned against reckless driving.
