President Bola Tinubu is currently in a closed-door meeting with Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori at the State House in Abuja.

Governor Oborevwori arrived around 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday for what marks his first official engagement with the President following his recent defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Until recently, a prominent figure in the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Oborevwori, made headlines on April 23 after leading a dramatic political realignment in Delta State. Alongside his predecessor, former PDP vice presidential candidate Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, and Deputy Governor Monday Onyeme, he officially joined the APC after a strategic meeting in Asaba.

Their defection was backed by a significant number of political allies, including cabinet members, local government chairmen, and key grassroots leaders—making Oborevwori the first sitting Delta governor to leave the PDP since the country’s return to democracy in 1999.

In a further blow to the opposition, Delta State House of Assembly Speaker Hon. Emomotimi Guwor and 21 other lawmakers have also joined the APC.

Tuesday’s meeting is seen as a strategic step in the APC’s continued efforts to consolidate power in the South-South region, where its influence is steadily growing. Party insiders hint at ongoing efforts to woo other opposition governors, including Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom), Peter Mbah (Enugu), Abba Yusuf (Kano), and Rivers State’s Siminalayi Fubara.

This growing wave of defections is intensifying internal rifts within the PDP, Labour Party, and NNPP, as all three face mounting challenges in retaining party unity under increasing pressure from the ruling party’s expanding reach.
