President Bola Tinubu has congratulated two British-Nigerians, Opeyemi Bright and Jason Jackson, on their historic election and inauguration as mayors in London.
In a statement issued by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu praised the duo for upholding the reputation of Nigerians abroad, commending their dedication to integrity, hard work, and public service.
“Your achievements are a source of pride and inspiration to young people in Nigeria and across the diaspora,” Tinubu said.
On behalf of the Nigerian government and its citizens, Tinubu extended warm congratulations to Mayor Bright and Mayor Jackson, encouraging them to remain steadfast in their commitment to their communities.
“I trust in your abilities and am confident you will continue to make meaningful contributions in your roles as mayors of Barking Dagenham and Islington,” the president added.
Opeyemi Bright made history as the youngest-ever civic mayor of Barking and Dagenham at age 29, after seven years of dedicated service, which began when she became the borough’s youngest Labour councilor at 22 in 2018.
Jason Jackson, elected as a councilor in 2022 and later Chair of Islington’s Homes and Communities Committee in 2023, now becomes the first Nigerian-born Mayor of Islington since its founding in 1900.
