Nigeria football is in mourning following the death of Mrs Sarah Chukwueze, the mother of Super Eagles forward and Fulham FC star, Samuel Chukwueze.
The sad news was announced in the early hours of Thursday, January 29, 2026, by members of the Chukwueze family. Samuel’s brother, David Chukwueze, shared a series of emotional messages on his Instagram story to mourn their mother’s passing. In separate posts, he wrote: “Can’t even post your picture to say RIP Mum,” “My forever love just left me without saying goodbye,” and “You didn’t even carry your grandchild.”
Samuel’s sister, Princess Chukwueze, also confirmed the death on social media, stating that their mother passed away after a brief illness.
As of the time of filing this report, Samuel Chukwueze, who was part of the Super Eagles squad that finished third at the recently concluded Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, has yet to publicly react to the loss.
Reacting to the development, the General Secretary of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Dr Mohammed Sanusi, expressed deep sorrow, describing Mrs Chukwueze as a strong and supportive influence in the lives of her children. He noted that the national team forward had often acknowledged his mother’s role in his professional growth.
“We are sad at her departure, coming only a few days after we had to mourn the sudden passing of the father of Super Eagles’ captain, Wilfred Ndidi,” Sanusi said. He added prayers for God to grant Mrs Chukwueze eternal rest and strength to her family to bear the loss.
Earlier this week, Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi lost his father in a car accident, marking a difficult period for the Nigerian football community as it mourns the loss of loved ones connected to two of its national heroes.
