No fewer than six final-year nursing students of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) have been confirmed dead in a tragic road accident while travelling to sit for their final examinations.

The victims, all 500-level candidates in the institution’s Open and Distance Learning Bachelor of Nursing Science programme, were reportedly on their way to Ogbomoso, Oyo State, for what was meant to be the final phase of their academic journey when the fatal crash occurred.

Among those who lost their lives was a student said to be heavily pregnant at the time of the accident, further deepening the grief surrounding the incident.

The bodies of the deceased have been deposited in a mortuary, where they are awaiting autopsy and further directives from the relevant authorities.

The tragic development has cast a pall of mourning over the university community and beyond. The deceased students were said to be practicing nurses who combined their hospital duties with academic pursuits, balancing careers, family responsibilities and the rigorous demands of professional training.

Colleagues and classmates who had anticipated reuniting with them in the examination hall have been left in shock and disbelief over the sudden loss.

As of the time of filing this report, the management of LAUTECH had yet to issue an official statement detailing the circumstances surrounding the accident.
