Two suspects arrested in connection with the death of Hon Justice Azuka, the lawmaker representing Onitsha I constituency of Anambra State of Assembly have escaped from police custody.

The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the sordid development on Tuesday.

Naija Daily News recalls that Hon. Azuka, who was elected on the platform of the Labour Party (LP), was kidnapped on Ugwunankpa Road, Inland Town, Onitsha, during the yuletide.

The police confirmation that his alleged killers have escaped from their custody came barely hours after the remains of the lawmaker were interred in Onitsha at the weekend.

State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the escape and said efforts are underway to capture the fugitives.

Ikenga said, “The Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, deployed resources immediately after receiving the report of the escape to track down the suspects. Disciplinary action has been initiated for any officers found responsible.”

He said preliminary investigations showed that the two suspects were helping police officers during an operation to arrest a receiver of stolen goods and recover vehicles used in the gang’s crimes. While the receiver was arrested and two stolen vehicles were recovered, the suspects managed to escape.

Commissioner Orutugu reassured the public that the police remain dedicated to capturing all criminals involved and ensuring justice. “Efforts are underway to re-arrest the fugitives and bring them to justice. Officers found negligent in this matter will face disciplinary action,” Ikenga added.
