Multiple residents, including children, have been reported missing following over six hours of heavy rainfall that struck parts of Adamawa State on Sunday.

According to survivors, more than 600 houses were swept away by floodwaters. Many narrowly escaped with their lives, and several families have been separated in the aftermath of the disaster.

In response, the Adamawa State Police Command, in partnership with the 23rd Armoured Brigade in Yola, has mobilized emergency teams to the affected communities. Efforts are ongoing to support residents and carry out rescue operations.

State police spokesperson Suleiman Nguroje confirmed on Sunday that specially trained marine officers have been deployed to assist in the flood-hit areas.

“Following the downpour affecting Shagari Low Cost, Sabon Pegi, Modire, and Yolde Pate in Yola South Local Government Area, the Commissioner of Police, Morris Dankwambo, has directed marine personnel to relocate to the affected communities for rescue efforts,” Nguroje stated.

In Sabon Pegi, resident Abubakar Adamu tearfully described the devastation, saying, “Many lives were lost, especially children. We’re still trying to confirm the exact number of casualties in this tragedy.”

Although official figures have not yet been released, eyewitness accounts suggest that several people may have died, with children among the hardest hit.

Another victim, John Audu, recounted how he and his family were asleep when the floodwaters entered their home.

“The water came so fast, we couldn’t take anything,” he said. “It filled the sitting room and the children’s bedroom before we could react.”

Just days before the incident, the Executive Secretary of the Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA), Celine Laori, had warned residents in low-lying areas to relocate, citing flood forecasts for the month.

In the wake of the disaster, residents are urgently calling on ADSEMA, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and state authorities to provide immediate relief — including food, shelter, and medical assistance.
