Gunmen have launched a deadly attack on Gebbe community in Shanga Local Government Area of Kebbi State, leaving an undisclosed number of people feared dead and several others injured.
Local sources said the community has been thrown into deep shock, noting that such a violent attack has not been witnessed in the area for many years.
The attack reportedly occurred suddenly when the assailants invaded the community and began shooting sporadically, forcing residents to flee their homes in search of safety. Many villagers were said to have escaped to neighbouring communities and nearby bushes to avoid being caught in the violence.
Sources added that the exact number of casualties could not immediately be determined due to the scale of the attack and the dispersal of residents to different locations.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Bashir Usman, said the attack did occur and that security operatives were on top of the situation. He noted that police officers are currently assessing the extent of the damage, including the number of lives lost and injuries sustained, adding that an official statement would be issued in due course.
Some residents, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said security agencies have since mobilized to the area to restore calm.
Residents have appealed to the government and security agencies for urgent intervention, describing the attack as deadly and calling for increased security presence in the community.
Efforts to reach the village head for further comments were unsuccessful, as calls to him were not answered.
