The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has sued the 36 state governors and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over their alleged failure to account for about N14 trillion realised as fuel subsidy savings.

SERAP disclosed in a statement on Sunday that the suit followed reports indicating that the governors and the FCT minister have received trillions of naira from Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) allocations since mid-2023, described as savings from the removal of fuel subsidy.

The organisation said the increased allocations have not reflected in improved access to quality healthcare and education for poor and vulnerable Nigerians, raising concerns about transparency in the use of public funds.

The suit, marked FHC/L/MSC/1424/2025, was filed last Friday at the Federal High Court in Lagos. SERAP is asking the court to compel the governors and Mr Wike to disclose details of how the increased FAAC allocations from fuel subsidy savings since May 2023 have been spent.

It is also seeking an order directing the respondents to provide details and locations of projects executed, if any, with the funds, as well as completion reports on such projects.

According to SERAP, Nigerians have a constitutional right to know how public funds, including fuel subsidy savings, are utilised by public officials, noting that transparency and accountability are central to democratic governance.

The group added that there is a legitimate public interest in requiring the governors and the FCT minister to urgently explain how the subsidy savings they have collected have been used.

No date has been fixed for the hearing of the suit.
