In a significant shift within the National Assembly, four senators elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) formally defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Wednesday, further eroding the opposition’s presence in the Senate.
The lawmakers who crossed over to the APC are Senator Aniekan Bassey (Akwa Ibom North East), Senator Ekong Sampson (Akwa Ibom South), Senator Francis Fadahunsi (Osun East), and Senator Olubiyi Oluwole Fadeyi (Osun Central).Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced their defections during plenary, marking the latest in a series of political realignments shaking up the Senate.
In a show of support, APC national secretary Senator Ajibola Basiru, Senator Chris Ngige, and Hon. Olamijuwonlo Alao-Akala—who represents Ogbomoso North, South, and Orire Federal Constituency—were present in the chamber for the announcement.
