The Supreme Court has overturned the Court of Appeal’s ruling in Abuja that recognized Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP).
In a unanimous decision on Friday, a five-member panel of the Supreme Court ruled that the Court of Appeal lacked the jurisdiction to declare Abure as the National Chairman of the LP, as it had previously determined that the case concerned the party’s leadership.
The court emphasized that leadership matters within a political party are an internal issue outside the jurisdiction of the courts and pointed out that Abure’s tenure had already ended.
The court upheld the appeal filed by Senator Esther Nenadi Usman and another individual, deeming it valid, and dismissed the cross-appeal from the Abure faction of the LP as lacking merit.
