NIGERIA: Miss Taraba, Chidimma Vanessa Onwe Adetshina, has emerged as Miss Universe Nigeria 2024, after defeating 24 other contestants for the coveted crowned.
Chidimma announcement on Saturday night at the grand finale of Miss Universe Nigeria elevated her to the position of Miss Universe, which will hold later in the year.
It would be recalled that Ms Adetshina was forced to withdraw from Miss Universe South Africa earlier in August following the widespread opposition to her candidacy because of her Nigerian heritage.
The 23-year-old law student was presented with the opportunity to contest by Taraba State, which she has now rewarded with her victory.
After the contestants showcased their elegance in evening gowns, the top five finalists Miss Taraba (Adetshina), Miss Anambra (Paula Ezendu), Miss Edo (Edeifo Brittany), Miss Ondo (Ayegbidun Peace Olamide), and Miss Rivers (Nyekachi Douglas) emerged.
As the winner, she will represent Nigeria at the 73rd Miss Universe competition in Mexico on 16 November.
Ms Adetshina’s perceived unfair treatment by the South African public laid the ground for the face-off between social media users in the country and their Nigerian counterparts in August.
The squabble culminated in the infamous Bolt War when a South African content creator went on a ride booking and cancelling spree in Nigeria, which led to a surge and loss of revenue for the ride-hailing service operators.
The incident triggered a massive response from Nigerians, who went all out in retaliation, causing a huge loss of revenue and an eventual apology and call for a truce by South African leaders.
