Attempt by the Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara to present the state’s 2025 budget to the House of Assembly on Wednesday morning was frustrated as the Martins Amaehule-led House shutdown the entrance to the assembly.
The development has added another layer of intrigue to the unending crisis between the executive and legislative arms of government in the state.
Governor Fubara, who was dressed in white senator attire and a red traditional cap, told reporters that before the incident he had made several futile attempts to reach the House leadership.
He said, “Before my arrival, I made several attempts to reach the Speaker. I also did a letter, personally, that was transmitted to the Honourable Speaker.
“But, unfortunately, the gate is completely sealed and there is no sign that anything is going to happen today.”
The governor, while expressing his disappointment about the development, reaffirmed that his actions are motivated by “the interest of the people.”
Meanwhile, the action of the Rt Hon Martins Amaehule led House is being condemned by citizens of the state, who believe that the 27 lawmakers loyal to former Governor Nyesom Wike, who is now Minister of the FCT, are acting out a script.
“The governor is trying to obey the Supreme Court judgment but there are fifth columnists who are hellbent on causing confusion and crisis in the state,” one source said.
