The Rivers State Government has announced plans to enhance waste management through Artificial Intelligence (AI) to unlock its economic potential for residents.
Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara announced this initiative following the signing of two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) for a $300 million Waste-to-Wealth project, a 200 MW power plant, smart e-mobility solutions, and carbon capture innovations.
The MoUs, signed with Intec and Omene Group, aim to convert waste into resources, generate electricity, create jobs, and boost the state’s revenue. The ceremony took place at the Ministry of Justice in Port Harcourt.
Represented by Attorney General Dagogo Israel Iboroma, SAN, Governor Fubara emphasized the significance of the collaboration, stating that waste management has long been a challenge for the state.
He noted that the government spends millions on waste collection and disposal with limited results, but this partnership marks a substantial step forward.
The project is expected to enhance the local economy, provide jobs for youth, improve cleanliness, and produce 200 MW of electricity daily. It will also capture 20 tons of carbon for trading as Carbon Credits. The Governor expressed confidence in the successful implementation of this innovative waste-to-wealth initiative.
Otuuba Prince Franklin Omene, CEO of Omene Group, praised the Governor for facilitating this investment and emphasized their commitment to complementing the efforts of the Rivers State Waste Management Authority. He highlighted the company’s global expertise in waste conversion.
Srinibach Dora Tepal of the German-based Intec Group thanked the Rivers State Government for fostering an investor-friendly environment and assured that the project would be executed at no cost to the state, supported by a robust business model.
The signing ceremony was attended by the Acting Sole Administrator of RIWAMA, Hon. Prince Obi Ohia, and Franklin Bottino of Intec Group.
