Residents of Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State, are alarmed by rising thefts of phones, bags, and purses, particularly during transit. These crimes are prevalent on major roads, especially in the mornings and evenings when commuters are hurrying to work or home.
It is reported that some motorists collaborate with accomplices who pose as passengers. These individuals strategically position themselves in the back seats, between passengers, or close to the door – to target unsuspecting victims.
They often carry multiple bags and distract nearby passengers by requesting them to make room, using this opportunity to steal phones and wallets. Their prime targets include individuals with many bags, women with children, and those unsure of their destinations.
Hotspots for these incidents include Aba Road, Water Lines, Mile One, and Iwofe Road.
Mrs Sophia, a teacher, lost her two phones while trying to exit a taxi, and realized they were taken when she struggled to open the door.
Another victim, Stanley lost his phone while riding a bus, while Miracle was threatened with a gun in a minibus and robbed of her belongings before being thrown out.
Mr. Lawrence and Barida, have faced similar fates, with thieves posing as fellow passengers. Jessica and her husband also fell victim when additional passengers stole their valuables.
As these thefts continue, many victims find the drivers silent during the crimes, raising concerns about their complicity.
