A tragic shooting in Minnesota early Saturday has left State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark dead, and State Senator John Hoffman and his wife critically injured, in what authorities believe was a politically-motivated attack.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz described the incident as a “politically-motivated assassination,” sparking widespread condemnation from congressional leaders and renewed concerns about political violence in the United States.

The fatal shooting occurred at the home of Rep. Hortman, a senior member of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party (DFL), where she and her husband were gunned down in what appears to have been a targeted assault. Police responded to emergency calls at the scene, where both victims were found with multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency responders confirmed that neither survived the attack.

In a separate but related incident that same morning, State Senator John Hoffman and his wife were ambushed at their home approximately 20 miles away. Both were shot multiple times and are now being treated at a Minneapolis hospital in critical condition.

Authorities believe the same assailant carried out both shootings in a coordinated effort to target high-profile Democratic lawmakers in Minnesota.

The shootings have prompted an outpouring of grief and condemnation from national political leaders. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson said in a statement on X that “such horrific political violence has no place in our society, and every leader must unequivocally condemn it.”

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries called the shootings “deeply disturbing,” and emphasised that “violence is never acceptable.” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer called the incident an “assault on our democracy,” warning that “this is where hate and violent rhetoric lead.”

Both lawmakers were influential figures within the Minnesota DFL. Melissa Hortman had served as Speaker of the Minnesota House and was widely respected for her leadership and advocacy. John Hoffman has long represented his district in the Senate, working on healthcare and education issues. Their prominence in state politics has led investigators to believe the shootings were politically motivated.

While the suspect’s identity has not been made public, officials confirm that a person of interest is in custody and undergoing questioning. The FBI and Department of Homeland Security are assisting Minnesota law enforcement in the investigation. Sources indicate that authorities are exploring possible links to political extremism or domestic terrorism as they work to determine a motive.

The killings have heightened security concerns across Minnesota, especially for elected officials. Police presence has been increased at the state capitol and at the residences of key political figures. Public vigils and memorials are being planned in both lawmakers’ districts, as residents struggle to make sense of the violence that has shaken their communities.

Governor Tim Walz expressed deep sorrow and outrage, calling the shootings “an attack on our public servants and on the democratic values we hold dear.” He urged Minnesotans and Americans everywhere to reject political hatred and violence, stressing the need for unity and justice.

The investigation remains ongoing as the state mourns the loss of Rep. Melissa Hortman and hopes for the recovery of Senator John Hoffman and his wife. Officials have promised to prosecute the case to the fullest extent of the law, calling the attack not only a personal tragedy but a direct threat to democratic governance.
