Professor Chris Piwuna, a renowned Consultant Psychiatrist and Professor of Medicine, has been elected as the new National President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Piwuna succeeds Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, a Professor of Agriculture at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State, who was elected ASUU President in May 2021.

The election took place during ASUU’s 23rd National Delegates Congress held at the University of Benin, in Benin City, Edo State. Professor Piwuna, the immediate past National Vice President of ASUU and former Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Jos, Plateau State, emerged victorious against his opponent, Professor Adamu Babayo of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi State.

The newly elected ASUU President brings years of academic and administrative experience to his new role and is expected to lead the union through ongoing negotiations and reforms in Nigeria’s tertiary education sector.

An official communiqué outlining the outcomes of the congress and ASUU’s next steps was been awaited at the time of this report on Monday afternoon.
