A Nigerian medical student based in Saint Lucia, Bob Chikwem Amadi, has described his brief encounter with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Saint Lucia’s Prime Minister, Philip J. Pierre, as an inspiring and unforgettable experience.
Amadi, a native of Rivers State and a student at the American International University in Saint Lucia, met the Nigerian President and the Lucian leader during President Tinubu’s state visit to the Caribbean nation. The meeting, according to a release by the president’s spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, took place on the second day of the President’s diplomatic visit, aimed at deepening Nigeria-Caribbean relations.
The young medical student, who also works part-time as a talent and brand manager with a local catering and entertainment company, was among the service team invited to support the courtesy visit at the Prime Minister’s official residence.
Amadi’s nationality caught the attention of the host, Prime Minister Pierre, who then introduced him to President Tinubu at the start of their bilateral meeting. The President, upon hearing that a Nigerian student was part of the service crew, paused to ask about Amadi’s name, background, and studies. He offered the student words of encouragement and best wishes for his future.
Amadi was later invited to take a group photograph with both leaders—an experience he described as a high point in his journey as a Nigerian student abroad.
“This is a very inspiring moment for me,” Amadi said. “Saint Lucia is an amazing island. I would describe it as a wonderful place. They are a very contented society, and things are relatively calm.”
Reflecting on the shared heritage between Nigeria and Saint Lucia, Amadi noted the similarities in culture, agriculture, and social values. “We have always hoped that there are many opportunities between Saint Lucia and Nigeria. We share similar food crops and culture, and the connection is deep,” he added.
Amadi has lived in the island nation for ten years and recently completed his four-year foundational programme in medicine. He is now preparing for the clinical phase of his education, a crucial step in his journey to becoming a licensed medical doctor.
President Tinubu’s visit to Saint Lucia marks part of Nigeria’s renewed effort to foster stronger ties with Caribbean countries, highlighting cultural, economic, and diaspora connections. The trip also underscores growing interest in partnerships between Nigeria and island nations across areas such as trade, education, health, and cultural exchange.
The Nigerian community in Saint Lucia welcomed the President’s presence, describing it as timely and symbolic for nationals living in the region.
