There was joy in Rome, Italy and other Catholic communities across the world following the return of Pope Francis to the Vatican following a five-week stay at Rome’s Gemelli hospital, where he was treated for double pneumonia.
This marks the most serious health challenge of his twelve-year papacy.
The 88-year-old pontiff, making his first public appearance since February 14, stopped briefly at the Basilica of Saint Mary Major before returning to the Vatican.
While his condition has improved, doctors caution that full recovery will take time. They have prescribed an additional two months of rest and advised him to avoid large or strenuous gatherings.
In his brief public appearance, Francis expressed gratitude to Carmela Vittoria Mancuso, a frequent visitor during his hospitalization. He was seen using a wheelchair and an oxygen hose.
Although he could not lead the traditional Sunday prayer, the Vatican released a prepared statement in which he thanked medical staff for their care and acknowledged the support of the faithful.
His recovery period may impact upcoming Vatican events, including scheduled meetings with Britain’s King Charles and Easter celebrations.
