The Imo State Police Command has confirmed the killing of five residents in the Ajanaumuna community of Ezinachi, Okigwe Local Government Area, in an attack that occurred around 10:30 p.m. on August 22, 2025.

In a statement released Monday by the command’s spokesperson, ASP Henry Okoye, the police disclosed that gunmen invaded the area, fatally shooting five individuals and setting fire to the residence of a local youth security leader, as well as destroying five motorcycles. One additional victim who sustained gunshot wounds is currently receiving treatment at a hospital.

According to the statement, those killed were identified as Edeh George, a member of the community’s youth security team, and four residents—Emeka Ezeagwula, Chikodi Ezeagwula, Chidi Chileke, and Ejike Nwankwo.

“Upon receiving the distress call, operatives swiftly mobilized to the scene and evacuated the victims to the General Hospital in Okigwe, where doctors confirmed them dead on arrival,” Okoye said.

“The bodies have been deposited in the hospital mortuary, while the injured survivor is undergoing medical treatment.”

Reacting to the incident, Imo State Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, condemned the attack and announced the deployment of a tactical team, working alongside sister security agencies and local vigilantes, to track down those responsible. The CP is personally overseeing the intensified operation in Okigwe.

He assured residents that justice will be served, stressing that “no stone will be left unturned” in bringing the perpetrators to book. He also extended condolences to the bereaved families and wished the wounded victim a swift recovery.

In a bid to reassure the public, the command has increased security presence in the area. Residents are urged to remain calm and report any suspicious activity or useful information to the police by contacting the nearest station or calling 0803 477 3600.

“The Imo State Police Command remains committed to the safety of all residents and encourages the public to support ongoing investigations with timely and credible information,” Okoye stated.
