The Rivers State Police Command has arrested two suspected cultists, one of them a serving police corporal, and recovered firearms and other weapons.
The suspects, identified as Corporal Onwukwe Godswill and Ifeanyi Israel, a 200-level Biomedical Technology student at the University of Port Harcourt, were apprehended during a confrontation with the university’s internal security team.
Police spokesperson SP Grace Iringe-Koko said in a statement that the suspects were intercepted while allegedly preparing for a clash with rival cultists on campus. A search on them yielded two locally made pistols, four rounds of live cartridges, two rounds of 9mm ammunition, and a small axe.
Further investigation led officers to the home of a suspected cult leader, where an additional pistol and two machetes were recovered.
The police confirmed that the suspects and exhibits are in custody while investigations continue.
Rivers State Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, reaffirmed the command’s resolve to maintain peace and security across the state. He urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities, stressing that cooperation between the public and security agencies is vital for a safer society.
